60 years of people helping people
This year we are celebrating our 60th anniversary. Back when we started, we were a small operation founded by eight volunteers. One of our first locations was a tiny building on Hanscom AFB, with a small staff watching over members’ savings accounts and car loans.
Today, we are a billion-dollar organization with 15 branches, a full-service Internet branch and more than 48,000 members served by 160 staff members. We offer a full range of savings, loan and investment products. Members can manage their accounts over the phone, online and increasingly with their smartphones.
But, what’s more important to me is how we have not changed. We are still focused on our mission – to provide superior financial service responsive to our members’ needs. We are accountable to all of our members, not to stockholders, and proudly assist all members, regardless of their resources.
Over the years, we have faced many challenges. We faced high inflation and recession in the late ’70s and early ’80s. We faced opposition from banks when we sought to expand our services, and they have attacked our tax-exempt status.
More recently, we faced the financial meltdown of 2009, which affected our members and our industry. And today we are facing increased regulation and an economy that is still recovering.
Through it all, we have remained strong and shown that putting members first is not only a good business practice, but also good for business. In 2012, we saw a 26% increase in new members joining us over 2011. For the 16th year in a row, we were able to give back to our members through an end-of-year loyalty dividend.
We’ll be rolling out celebrations throughout the year as we mark our 60th anniversary milestone. Be sure to keep in touch with us at our website and our new Facebook page. We’re looking forward to another productive and prosperous year in 2013.
Join Us May 4 for the Annual Meeting
The annual meeting is an opportunity to get a first-hand view of what we are: a cooperative organization dedicated to its members. It’s also a great time – dinner and dancing – for only $12 per person. Not only that, but you could win a prize in our cash raffle. Tickets for the dinner may be purchased at a branch, on our website at www.hfcu.org/meeting or by phone at 800-656-4328.
